Finally, DJI just added a new version of waypoints for the Mavic 2 drones in a DJI Go 4 app update. So far the update is only available for iOS, but I would expect an update for Android users to follow soon. The vastly improved waypoints feature is the main improvement in this update but not the only one. Other improvements are optimizations of the software and the stability of the editor. Waypoints in DJI Go 4 app update
In the past, DJI had failed to provide a solid waypoints solution and as a result, many drone pilots used the app from Litchi. However, today, DJI has finally provided us with what seems to be a very solid waypoints solution. One caveat, it will only work on the DJI Mavic 2 series and only on iOS devices for now.
You can now go ahead and create a waypoints mission without having to fly your Mavic 2 drone to set the actual waypoints. This is indeed a major improvement as you can now plan your flights from the comfort of your couch. DJI offers you to fly in two different route types: polyline or with an arc. The first option will let you fly from point to point. The second option forms a smooth arc as the drone flies from point to point. Contrary to the Litchi app, the new version of the DJI Go 4 app does not actually show the arcs nor does it allow you to change the arc. I hope this will be added in a future update as it helps a great deal to plan and visualize your flight path.
Furthermore, waypoints 2.0, if you will, allows you to save a number of tasks, determine what you want the drone to do when it loses the RC signal when it is finished. You can also add points of interest, change the drone direction, camera angle, set tasks, change the speed, etc. Basically all the features you would expect from an improved waypoints feature.
Unfortunately, it is raining hard here in NY so I can’t try the new waypoints feature myself. But, based on what you can see in this detailed video below from KlooGee, I think there is plenty of reason to be excited about the latest update for the DJI Go 4 app!
